Summary[]

Mars Excursion Module

Doug and Tony find themselves aboard a spaceship.

Spinning out of the time vortex, Doug and Tony alight in the Mars Excursion Module - a project they know is set to occur ten years hence. Meanwhile, Commander Kane has just learned from flight engineer Beard that they are carrying 300 pounds extra weight, and therefore cannot reach escape velocity. Unable to consult Mission Control, Kane orders the service module to be jettisoned and announces the mission scrubbed.

At Project Tic-Toc, the team have located the time travelers only to find they are in danger of being set adrift. But instead, Beard fires the boosters, in the process losing fuel that will need to be replenished from a depot on the Moon.

When the time travelers are discovered, they are thought to be saboteurs by everyone except Dr. Harlow. As Beard is insisting they be ejected into space, Kane calls for a calculation to see if their added weight will prevent a safe landing on the Moon. Back at Project Tic-Toc the computers work on the same problem, their final results indicating a crash while Kane's onboard computer informs him otherwise.

The landing is rough, but the spaceship survives it. Kane holds Tony and Doug at gunpoint while Beard and Harlow go to the depot for fuel. Beard proves to be the real saboteur as he murders Harlow then prepares explosives to blow up the spaceship, his purpose being to prevent the U.S. from getting to Mars first.

Meanwhile a Time Tunnel control console has been blown up by Washington observer Brandon; another observer is Beard only ten years younger than the one on the Moon. When word comes to Project Tic-Toc that there is an enemy agent among them, Brandon pulls a gun and flees. The younger Beard finds and kills him.

Moon-Fight

The aftermath of a fight inside the lunar fuel depot.

On the Moon, Tony and Doug take action to acquire spacesuits and go after older Beard, who is blown up by the explosives. As Kane blasts off for Mars, our heroes are transported back into the time vortex.

Background information/trivia[]

The mission control voice is provided by Dick Tufeld, who also voiced the Robot in Lost in Space (1965), another Irwin Allen production. He also serves as the narrator on this program, so he essentially plays two roles in this episode.

This episode takes place aboard the Mars Excursion Module in 1978 and in Arizona in 1968.

The uniform patches worn by the MEM crew are the same patches worn by the "Spindrift" crew in Land of the Giants (1968), another Irwin Allen production. They were also used as insignia for the uniforms worn by members of "Galaxy" organization, in the film Our Man Flint (1966).

Much of the spacewalking and moon walking scenes are re-used footage from Destination Moon (1950).
